Understand balances
Where a balance comes from, and why no screen lets you edit it.
The Shared balances screen opens from the Debts tile on the home screen, or from the debts summary card.

Where a balance comes from
It is never entered. Boney takes the budget's expenses, computes what each person actually paid, what each should have borne according to each expense's split, and derives a net balance.
Reciprocal balances offset each other
If you owe me 30 and I owe you 20, a single balance is shown: you owe me 10. Boney does not show two debts that partly cancel out.
Each expense's split is the source of truth
Not the budget's current split. Changing the budget rule today therefore does not rewrite yesterday's balances.
There is no direct editing
No screen lets you create, edit or erase a balance. Only two moves change one: correct the expense that produced it, or record a settlement.
Settling from the right budget
Balances are anchored to the budget that produced the expense. To settle one, the screen points you back to the source budget: that is where the settlement is recorded.
