Scan a receipt
Photograph a receipt, get one expense per category.
Premium feature
Receipt scanning is part of Boney Premium. Without a subscription the screen says so rather than failing midway.
What scanning does
You photograph the receipt. Items are read, sorted by category, then grouped into expenses: one per category. You keep control of each grouping before saving.
Review screen for a scanned receipt
public/images/help/depenses/scan-ticket.pngReading usually takes 10 to 30 seconds.
The review screen
Each group carries a name, a budget and its items. A group can be edited, an item moved between groups or removed.
Two blockers before creation:
- Budget to choose on a group
- Zero or negative amount
Items left Uncategorised will not be saved — the screen warns how many will be ignored.
The confirm button states what will be written
It announces the number of expenses and the total actually created — "Create 3 expenses (€48.20)". That is the total about to be saved, not the one printed on the receipt. The two differ as soon as an item is dropped.
Warnings
The screen reports what it could not do, rather than staying silent:
- the sum of items does not match the printed total
- the receipt is very long, only the first items were read
- lines with an unreadable amount were dropped
- items with no confident category were filed under Miscellaneous
- the currency could not be read
When it fails
- No purchase read — retake the receipt flat and whole
- Image too large — take the photo closer
- Too many scans — a rate limit applies, the screen states the delay
- No connection — scanning needs internet
- Camera access denied — re-enable it in the phone settings
If some expenses fail at creation, the screen says so and lets you retry the affected groups.
